Problem: Growing Need for Genetics Education Among Healthcare Providers

Genetics is a complicated and evolving area of study and while the direct-to-consumer test marketing continues to experience rapid growth, many health care providers are struggling to keep up. As more opportunities for precision medicine are presented to improve patient outcomes, health care providers at all levels require a deeper understanding of genetic concepts as well as direct-to-consumer genetic tests, what the results of these tests can and cannot reveal, and how to communicate with clients about their test results.

Solution: Comprehensive Genetics Course Developed

What began as a four-video series discussing direct-to-consumer genetic testing evolved into a genetics course co-developed by 23andMe, Diffusion Studios, and two independent subject matter experts. The course includes 13 videos and accompanying assessment items. The video content is engaging and easy enough to digest that members of the general public find it useful, and existing,
as well as future, health care providers gain the understanding they need to be able to incorporate discussion about patient test results into their practice.

Result: Highly Effective Training with Positive Provider Feedback

23andMe reported being able to efficiently and effectively educate a group of health care providers to be able to provide a clinical service related to genetics. In a survey of these health care providers, 97% of respondents found the content to be “very helpful” or “helpful” in facilitating their learning about genetics.

23andMe had this to say about their experience with Diffusion Studios:

“Enthusiastic staff with a willingness to bring in needed expertise. They are truly dedicated to helping us distribute the videos to our target audiences and using their contacts/relationships to help us do so.”

– A. Greb, MS, CGC, 23andMe, Medical Education Lead (former)
