Problem: Protecting Indigenous Lands and Knowledge Through Education
Indigenous Peoples around the world continue to advocate for their homelands in order to protect them from colonization and destruction. Educating people about the customary tenure, food systems, and traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples is necessary and will help to support Indigenous People, now and in the future, as they discuss guardianship policies at all levels.
Solution: Creating a Video Series on Customary Tenure and Sustainability
Nia Tero, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples groups around the world, and Diffusion Studios set about creating a video series that discusses the importance of honoring customary tenure, sustainable food system practices, and the traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples. The videos reflect on the roles these things, and the policies that affect them, play in supporting diversity of life on the planet and the protection of natural resources for all.
Result: Widely Viewed Videos Premiered at Global Conservation Congress
The first video in the series, Customary Tenure and Land Rights premiered during the 2021 International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress which was attended by world leaders including the U.S. President and the U.K. Prime Minister. In total, three (3) “superb, original” mixed media videos were created by combining live action video provided by Nia Tero with whiteboard animation developed by Diffusion Studios. Special care was taken to ensure contemporary representation of Indigenous Peoples around the world was done appropriately and respectfully.
When asked about their experience with Diffusion Studios, Nia Tero shared:
